How to hire or lease a motorbikes in Hanoi

Almost every village, town, city, island or accommodation type in Hanoi will offer the facility to hire a motorbikes, as will travel agencies and even street stores. At each of these places the price and quality of motorbike will be different as will the standard of care on maintenance between leasing them.

If you decide (or are required to) walk around and search for a motorbike hire shop, you will need to take a little extra care. Do not assume just because it is a motorbike leasing business that the staff have your safety at all in concern. Preform the safety checks listed further down, and do not be afraid of walking away if nothing is available. You life is at stake, and while it might be easy to give into temptation and rent a motorbike because it is getting hot — This should be a thought out and careful decision.

Try to avoid places that do not speak English. Sure you may feel fantastic at your gallant efforts at miming and hiring, but you know nothing about the insurance conditions or will be able to get help when you break down. The bottom line is, if someone starts a business hiring motorbikes and does not appreciate the language of their customers — what else is lacking?

Where to Hire motorbike in Hanoi?

Hanoi offers not only a charming coastine with beautiful sights but also many convenient services with competitive prices for tourists. Nowadays in Hanoi, there is also a wide range of motorbike rental services with reasonable rates. You can contact the bike owners to order, or directly come to the stores to check your bikes.  Otherwise, you can also contact hotels, guesthouses, or traveller cafes for arranging scooter rental service for you. Most of the renting motorbikes in Hai Ba Trung are high-quality and well maintained.

The rental fee is quite cheap, just about US$ 5 – 10 per day, depending on the quality, type and size of the scooters, with discounts for long rental. If you hire a bike for several days, it is also easy to find a parking place in Hai Ba Trung as all of the hotels and guesthouses here are able to accommodate your scooters overnight.

Most renting motorbikes in Hanoi are 125cc and that’s all you need. The speed limit in the city center is 40km per hour, but it is much safer if you do around 30 as there are not your standard road rules and riding conditions… If you are not familiar with Vietnam traffic yet, be careful when riding on the open roads because there are a lot of vehicles of various sizes and speeds there.

How much Motorbike Rental Hanoi?

The company will usually charge per 24 hours. When you rent for a day. the price you pay will vary depending on where you are, whether the bike is older or new, and an automatic or a manual one. In some places, you may have a discount for a weekly rental, most will for a monthly hire term.

If you intend to hire this motorbike for a long time (over a week), make sure you have a good deal with the company. (especially in peak seasons insist on a daily rate for how many days you hire).

Budget is about 120.000 to 200.000 VND per day or 800.000 to 1.200.000 VND for monthly rental. It depends on your motorbike preference.

Note that motorbikes rental Hanoi prices in popular tourist destinations in Hoang Mai are higher compared to less touristy areas. If you plan to rent a scooter in Hanoi. I recommend getting a bigger Motorbikes than 50cc.

I recommend renting a scooter from a scooter rental that looks trustworthy. Renting a scooter from your hotel is a good option although it will cost you more. But as we’re talking about a few dollars difference, it is a less risky option than to rent from a business that looks suspicious.

Carefully before signing in a contract of motorbike rental in Hanoi

It is very important to check your vehicle carefully not only when having a motorbike rental in Hanoi. but everywhere. In case your plan is only to drive around the city, it might be fine to not care about the vehicle quality that much. However, with a longer journey, more than 30 kilometers, it is really important.

The first check is for handbrake. It is very important for you to make sure that the handbrake still works well. Moreover, you also should check the accelerator, warning light, indicators, horn, and kickstand. The second check is to test the vehicle. It is better if you can ask the owner for a testing drive. At least, you could know if the machine is good or not for the road conditions that you are going to go.

There is one more important tip for you. Remember to deal with the owner that if there are any problems occur to the vehicle, you must have the right to change to another motorbike. If it is worse that there is no motorbike left, the owner has to refund you the rental.

RentABike Hanoi

Shop to Most motorbike rental shops in Hanoi specialise in rentals to backpackers and travellers making the trip from north to south, or around the Ha Giang Loop. RentABike is a little different. Founded by Danny – who came to Vietnam more than 20 years ago – and his wife, Thu, RentABike has found a niche for itself offering long-term rentals to expats living in the city. Their whole operation is geared toward long-term reliability, from the bikes they rent to the swathe of local contacts they can put you in touch with.

https://www.cdprojekt.com/pl/forums/users/motorbikenguyentu/

For puttering around the city, they offer a range of automatic and semi-automatic Yamaha and Honda scooters in the 100cc-135cc range, with the cheapest going for $7 (£5.42) per day. However, their long-term rentals range from $40 to $85 (£31 to £66) per month if you’re planning on staying in and around Hanoi (they also have branches in Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City). If you’re just touring, or planning a longer trip between cities, their rates are a little steeper ($10 to $35 [£7.74 to £27] per day). This is definitely the shop for you if you’re planning a longer stay in Hanoi.

Quan's Motorbike & Bicycle Rentals

you’d rather go down a more local route, then Mr Quan’s in the Old Quarter is the place for you. Scooter rentals will run you $5 (£3.87) per day, and you can rent a bigger bike for around $45 (£38.40) per month if you’re planning to do some serious touring.

Mr Quan speaks impeccable English and has a reputation as a really funny guy. More importantly, however, he’s prompt to respond to any distress calls and will get a replacement bike to you as soon as he can.

Phung Motorbike

There are plenty of places in Hanoi to rent a reliable, safe automatic or semi-automatic scooter at a fair price. If it’s your first time riding, or you want something a little more low maintenance for the intense stop-start traffic in the city, then a reasonably priced scooter is probably for you. If you know what you want, and want it cheap from a Vietnamese-owned business with a pretty jazzy website, then Phung Motorbike is for you.

This place really embodies the spirit of laissez-faire backpacking, at $6 (£4.64) per day for a 120cc Lifan or Detech Win. Along with Sufat, these are the best knock-off Honda Wins you can buy; an immaculate one is actually something of a collector’s item in Vietnam. Phung’s is a perfect sweet spot between value and reputability.

Hanoi Easy Rider

For the more mature speed demons and responsible maniacs, Easy Rider is the only real option. First and foremost, it is a tour company, offering some of the best trips from Hanoi out to places like Ninh Binh (maybe one of the most beautiful rural locales in Vietnam), as well as day trips around the city. Easy Rider isn’t cheap. At $135 (£104) per day, their tours are on the high end of the price scale. Appropriately, one of their slogans is “Travel is never a matter of money, but of courage.” For those with courageous wallets though, Easy Rider is a great option.

Their riders are some of the most experienced in the country, and the cost includes the bike rental, a helmet, knee pads, waterproof gear, fuel, road tolls, visiting tickets, local English-speaking tour guides and local food and accommodation in a good hotel, so it’s definitely good value. If you’re not looking to base your whole trip around motorbike riding, then a three-day jaunt with the folks at Easy Rider is a great way to get the experience without sacrificing your creature comforts.

Flamingo Travel

A motorcycle shop in Hanoi with more bona fides. Flamingo Travel has been operating in the city since 1998, making it one of the oldest operations in the country. Specialising in top-of-the-line dirt and touring bikes from the leading Japanese brands, Flamingo Travel is the perfect shop for those who want to make the epic journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (or vice versa) in style.

It has a branch at both ends of the country and specialises in one-way rentals. The entry-level rental is the Kawasaki KLX 150cc, which is perfect for a daytime ride ($30 [£23] per day) and the range goes all the way up to the monstrous 650cc Honda XR ($55 [£43] per day). Flamingo’s prices are high, but their bikes are well maintained, as is the safety gear that comes with a rental. They also offer guided tours, an airport shuttle service, hotel rentals and a selection of used bikes for sale.

The Check List When rent a motorbike Hanoi

When you find a bike you like, follow this process to ensure it is in top condition:

https://blip.fm/motorbikenguyentu

  • Start the bike and see if it holds an idle well (an idle is when the bike engine runs without you turning the throttle).
  • Test the front and rear turn signals and lights as well as the brake lights.
  • Press the horn and make sure it is easy to press and loud. You will be using it often!
  • Check the condition of the tyres. If they are balding, then you may not have good traction in the rain.
  • With the bike on the centre stand, spin the back wheel to make sure it does not wobble or vibrate.
  • Take the bike for a test drive, and test both brakes. They should feel tight and allow you to come to a quick stop. If not, then they should be able to fix this on the spot.
  • After test riding the motorbike at a higher speed for 15 minutes or so, stop and let the engine idle for a bit. Make sure the engine is still behaving as it did when you first started it up. Ensure that it doesn’t ‘kick’ or perform in an unstable way.
  • Turn off your bike after the engine is warm from a long test ride. Wait a bit to see if there any oil leaks—a sign that the engine is not in good condition
